Sheamus Burns

Painter, printmaker, organizer, and builder of a regional art outpost rooted in place, memory, and shared creative life.

Sheamus Burns is an artist, organizer, and software engineer working at the intersection of place, memory, and regional creative life in South Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania. He is the founder of Bull Thistle Art Studio & Gallery in Owego, New York, a regional art outpost dedicated to supporting artists, fostering shared inquiry, and building a culture of making rooted in landscape and community.

His painting practice combines close observation with a deliberately open, searching visual language. The work moves between realism and structural simplicity, emphasizing value, color relationships, and compositional clarity while leaving space for intuition and discovery. Across painting, printmaking, and small-format works, he often returns to marked landscapes, regional memory, vernacular structures, and traces of human presence embedded in ordinary terrain.

In founding Bull Thistle, Burns created a working studio, exhibition space, and community platform for artists across the region. The gallery hosts prompt-based exhibitions, workshops, sketch meetups, and seasonal programming designed to help artists show work, test ideas, and participate in a shared creative rhythm.

A central initiative of the gallery is the Summit Challenge, a recurring exhibition series inviting artists to create new work in response to a shared theme. Through this and related programs such as Sunday Sketch Club, Saturday Studio, and Inside the Studio, Bull Thistle has become a space for sustained creative engagement rooted in the life of the surrounding region.

Alongside his studio practice, Burns has worked as a software engineer on large-scale digital systems. That technical background informs his approach to building artist-centered structures that support participation, communication, and collaboration across a distributed regional community.

His work as both an artist and founder reflects a long-term commitment to making space for experimentation, conversation, and the emergence of new regional cultural forms.
